Ok, this still isn’t absolutely official, but it may as well be by now.
Sources close to the 3G iPhone launch have told Gizmodo that Apple will announce their new model at the WWDC Keynote on June 9th.
Gizmodo just dropped this little gem, which to be honest, isn’t really anything we didn’t suspect already. They continue however and mention that the second-generation iPhone should be avaliable worldwide by the 19th June. That’s pretty fast, but again, nothing we weren’t really expecting.
Dammit Apple, just say it already.
A kinda-fresh new rumour has surfaced recently, and it’s quite an interesting one at that. Apparently, Apple are really fighting for a certain feature to be available to the second-gen iPhone users; over-the-air music downloads. Now, this is not entirely new – we can already download music wirelessly using iTunes, but this new deal would allow Apple to sell things like ringtones and other content also over the air, all using 3G.
Sounds neat, but according to the rumour, the record companies involved in the yet-to-be-finalised-and-entirely-speculated deal are asking for a higher premium for tracks than if you were to download them via traditional ways. Hum.
Could this actually be the 3G iPhone? Maybe.
The iPhone doesn’t cost three g’s, but it’ll soon support 3G. Ok – that was seriously lame – and with that, I bring to you… The 3G iPhone: What We’ve Heard So Far.
It all started when AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson blurted out this when asked about the possibility of a 3G iPhone:
You’ll have it next year.
It was obvious we would get a 3G iPhone eventually, but this statement just backed up everything we’d been hearing. After this, the interweb went shit-stirringly mental, with stories popping up daily about how awesome the next-gen i(jesus)Phone is going to be.
So time went on, and we entered “next year” – as to be expected, the rumours were coming in from left and right. There are so many of these rumours its become pretty hard to keep track of what has been said – here’s what we’ve heard so far…
- 3G Support (holy shit batman) with the ability to fall back to Edge.
- GPS – you know, for actual tracking. None of this cell tower malarkey which to this day still displays my house being in the middle of a nearby fucking lake.
- Video Chat Mirror Thing; Kevin Rose brought this up in a recent episode of Diggnation – apparently he has an ‘inside guy’ who has told him the camera on the iPhone will be in the same place it is now, except it will be ‘like a mirror’ where it can record from either end, so that you can do voice calls and all that cool stuff. Interesting.
- Avaliable in all black or all white. No more aluminium back. Nice and glossy.
- Faster CPU, more memory.
- Reports of a larger screen by Intel; possibly confusion, as most other rumours out there state the screen is the same size.
So there you have it; that’s what we know so far. Obviously, none of this is confirmed, but most of it may as well be.
